Homemade Eye Makeup Remover Pads
Homemade eye makeup remover pads are easy and awesome. I’ve found lots of different recipes for homemade removers online. Most are oily or too strong for my very sensitive skin. Then I found this brilliant version.
And while I LOVED how it worked it was inconvenient to apply to a cotton ball and have to deal with two containers at night when I am tuckered out. Sounds silly when I put it that way, but the less steps involved in my nighttime routine the better!
So I thought I’d add the cotton pads to the container and create my own homemade eye makeup remover pads just like the store bought version. It’s even MORE awesome!
Why?
You might be asking why bother? The stuff you buy at the store works and it’s all ready for you. But look at the label…
- Poloxamer 184
- butylene glycol
- disodium lauroamphodiacetate
- sodium trideceth sulfate
- and the list goes on!
What the heck ARE these things? And night after night I was dutifully rubbing these chemicals on my eyes to remove my makeup.
How Much?
And all those chemicals aren’t cheap! For the 100 count of them they cost anywhere from $5.99 to $11.99 (depending on the brand). I was able to make about a 3 month supply (about 100 pads) for $2.00! The most expensive part was the cotton pads…the ingredients for the liquid only added up to $0.11!
There are a few sunk costs with this version - the castile soap and the glass jar. The glass jar can be used over and over again (I have many just laying around my house). And the castile soap can be used for LOTS of other household applications (I also just keep that stuff around the house).
The Recipe
I’ve included links to the products on Amazon.com. If you choose to purchase from the links below, I receive a small commission at no additional cost to you.
1 Cup Distilled Water (Not tap water)
1/4 tsp Castile Soap (the baby mild version)
1 tsp Olive Oil (Jojoba Oil would also work - whatever you prefer)
You’ll also need a glass jar (squatty mason jars) and some flat cotton pads (usually found in the makeup section).
Mix up your water, castile soap, and olive oil. Stuff your glass jar with pads (they absorb a lot and you want them to be damp, but not soaking wet). Pour your mixture over the top of the pads in the glass jar. Screw on the cap and flip it upside down to make sure all the pads get saturated.
Keep the cap on tight when not in use. You might need to flip the jar upside down every once in a while to distribute the liquid evenly throughout the pads.
That’s it! You just made your own chemical-free, cheap homemade eye makeup remover pads.
Homemade eye makeup remover pads do not contain preservatives so they will not last forever…but that’s a good thing! I suggest only making up one batch at a time to ensure they stay fresh and bacteria free.

Does It Work?
Yes! I honestly think it works better than the stuff I was buying before. Plus, my eyes no longer sting. It’s a bit embarrassing to admit, but I used those darn pads for YEARS and they stung my eyes all the time.
I know a lot of folks use straight coconut oil or other versions that contain oils, but they are just much too greasy for my skin. Plus these pads are useful when you have an oopsy when you’re applying your makeup…but don’t want to be greasy for the whole day. You can use them to do a quick spot cleaning.
