Homemade Toothbrush Case
In the continuing spirit of easy homemade gifts that are a cinch to make (and inexpensive) I’ve got a great one for you today! Let me introduce the homemade toothbrush case! It’s cute, practical, involves only a teeny bit of sewing, and is very inexpensive. My kids do a ton of sleepovers so these are perfect because they are washable.
Step 1 - Choose Your Materials
The first step for me was choosing cute washcloths and ribbon to match. I was making these specifically for my girls to use at sleepovers so I opted for solid washcloths and cutesy ribbon. But to make it a more adult look - you could certainly go the other way and have patterned washcloths and solid ribbons. You really don’t even have to use ribbon. You could use any sort of material that would enable you to tie these together. Just use your imagination.
Step 2 - Measure Out the Pockets
Fold your washcloth to create one large pocket.
Next step is measuring out how large you want your individual pockets to be. I opted for 3″ pockets (approximately) because it felt right. There’s certainly no science to this - just eyeball it and you’ll get a sense for what looks right. Also you can see below that I made this shorter for a kid’s toothbrush because it’s easier for my littlest to handle. Just grab the size of toothbrush and toothpaste you want to put in it and use that as a guide for the depth of the pockets.
Step 3 - Sew Your Pockets
I am no seamstress, but I can sew a straight line. And that is all this takes - I promise! I have friends who hear the word “sew” and begin to groan. But it’s just 5 short straight lines. Even if you can’t handle this on your own (or you don’t have a sewing machine) - I’d be willing to bet you have a friend who could help. You could do a whole batch of them together and drink coffee!
I didn’t actually take a picture of me sewing the straight lines, but you get the idea right? Here’s what it looks like with the lines sewn and a toothbrush and toothpaste inserted into the freshly created pockets.
Step 4 - Attach the Ribbon Tie
The last step is to sew the ribbon onto the back of the washcloth so that the whole bundle can be tied up. You can either hand sew it or use your machine. You’re really just tacking it on so it stays in place. Measure out a length of ribbon (again - I just eyeballed it knowing that I’d need enough to create a bow when the washcloth was folded up), fold it in half, and using that half-way point - pin it to the back of your sewn washcloth. Now sew it in place. Easy!
Put It Together
You’re done! And it’s so cute! You can add more than just toothbrush and toothpaste - we discovered brushes and combs fit well too.
Now you’re ready to fold it up. Stock it up with goodies (like above.) Then take either side and fold it over (like below.)
Fold it again and tie the ribbon into a bow. It’s night-away-from-home ready!
My girls were thrilled when I presented each of them with their own individual toothbrush case. It’d be a great stocking stuffer or birthday gift (you could combine it with other bath-type items). Would you ever make one of these?
