DIY Purple Minion Costume
I absolutely adore the minions. I know this is a commonly held opinion – but they are just so funny! When I got my first look at the evil purple minions – I liked them even more. I mean how hysterical are they? So of course we had to come up with a super quick and easy DIY purple minion costume. Because everyone should dress up like one at least once!
I have some criteria that I use to determine if a costume is good for a kid. It has to be comfortable, weather appropriate (too hot or too cold makes it no fun), and fun to wear. I know some folks will do anything in the name of fashion, but in my experience when a kid gets a costume that isn’t a good fit – it doesn’t stay on for long.
This one is the best examples of what I’m talking about – it’s easy to wear, cute, and comfortable. Plus it only took about 10 minutes to pull together. If you can use a hot glue gun, tie a few knots, and bend a pipe cleaner – you can pull this off. And I think it turned out super cute!
Purple Minion Costume Ingredients
- Hair rubber bands
- Mason jar lid rings
- Black pipe cleaner
- Black elastic
- Hot glue gun with glue
- Black suspenders
- Purple shirt
The very first step is to create your minion goggles. I took two jar rings (the kind you use for mason jars) and attached them with a black pipe cleaner in the middle. Then I took a piece of black elastic and very casually measured my head. You can choose to sew the elastic to the jar rings or you can simply hot glue them (what I did in the interest of time!)
Next up is to create your “crazy minion hair” with the help of some crazy, shaggy, purple hairbands. My kids aren’t too keen on coloring their hair (hair chalk can be messy and gross to clean up), but don’t mind wearing things in their hair. I simply used scraps of purple that I dug out of my scraps bin and tied them to two regular old hair elastics. The resulting look when formed into two high piggytails is somewhat minion-like. And it’s easy to remove at the end of the night!
Assembling the Costume
After that – it’s really as simple as wearing a purple shirt and black suspenders with whatever pants you want. The suspenders we chose required a belt so we went for jean shorts to secure them to. But you could find the true clip-on type of suspenders and just clip them to your shirt or the tops of your pants.
